Hmmm. I've never thought doing this is that big a deal. Most Mac applications have a "Paste and match style" option that does just that. My only gripe is that it isn't the default action for Command-P. It should be, and there should be an alternate "Paste and preserve style" option. But that's just me.

I've actually been up in one of those. I went to NMT, which is right by there. A friend of a friend worked at the VLA and got us in after hours. One of the dishes was out near the barn for maintenance so we climbed up into it. The hardware looked *ancient* After that we got a tour of the data-crunching facilities. Banks and banks of tape machines lined up like something out of a futuristic 70's movie. Pretty laughable compared to its depiction in the movie Contact (which was filmed while was in school there.)

Sorry for the long comment, but I just spent about half an hour looking for my photos from inside the dish but couldn't find them. One was really neat: you could see the mountains off in the distance, cropped below by the curving rim of the dish.

Good times.

I can't help, other than to sympathize and nod vigorously in agreement. If it's any consolation, Windows apps suffer from the same too-clever-by-half problem. Usually there isn't even a keyboard short cut for "Paste Special..." to get to the unformatted option. Thank heavens for Linux...

Don McKellar rocks! I remember seeing the production trucks with "Twitch City" being filmed a block or two away from my apartment and wondering what the heck that was all about... then I actually saw it. I contacted CBC a year or two ago to see if I could buy the series on DVD, but no dice. They don't own the rights. Bad CBC.

That's actually a paper by some Yahoo! Research folks like Cameron Marlowe. Reading the paper I was sort of confused about the methods they used for the taxonomy of user behavior. They pull tag data out of Flickr and del.icio.us, but I don't see how they can make such detailed claims about user motivations w/o actually talking to users.

Hey Don - glad to see your thoughts on Daybreak. I've been enjoying it quite a bit (moreso than 'Lost' actually, cause the pacing of the thing really makes me believe that they're gonna SOLVE it in one season.)

As for game recommendations, I hear that this will keep a fella like you sharp as a tack: http://www.brainage.com/launch/index.jsp :-D

The explosion of indie pizza joint is awesome. I still haven't hit Eastside Pies or Salvation yet, but of the two South Congress joints, I like <a href="http://www.southsideflyingpizza.com/" rel="nofollow">Southside Flying</a> better than Homeslice. Their Sundried Tomato Pesto pizza is awesome, although the middle tends to get a bit soggy at times. It's on South Congress almost to Oltorf, just before Nueva Onda and run by a longtime Guero's employee, Bill. Have either of you tried it?

Did you set the path in Ecto for the photos on the server side? Dealing with pictures is a little bit hinky in Ecto: you drag the photo into the editing pane, click on the resulting link; this brings up another window where you customize the image's params. The key param here is "destination" which should be relative to WP's root; in my setup, all the pictures go to ~/content/

On yours, images are apparently going to ~/wp-content/uploads/[yy]/[mm]/[dd]/ . Because the path is being generated on the WP side, I wonder if that is confusing Ecto. You can turn off the date hierarchy in WP, or you might in touch get with Adriaan

Salvation's #1 is the new consensus favorite for my vegetarian daughters and me. It's so good that we've even cut back on our long-standing custom of ordering take-out at Conan's and stopping by Vulcan for a video while we're there -- although my eight year old keeps wanting us to order a sympathy pie from Conan's anyway.

I checked this out in my local Target last night, and it's <em>really</em> cool in person. I'm trying not to invest too much in DVDs anymore, but this one is tempting.

Could their blog engine handle the load of all the Chron.com traffic? That's some capacity planning.

(Or did I miss the point, and it wasn't that the fire affected the Chron.com servers, but rather that the writers and editors can't access the Chron CMS from Starbucks?)

Either way, yes, kudos to the quick footwork.

The Houston Chronicle does some mighty fine blogging. In particular, I'm thinking of Dwight Silverman's stuff. He marries the view and ethos of a blogger with the skill and training of a journalist. I think his blogging on the wireless issue during the last legislature and Katrina last year were stand-out great.

It's the old joke (re-told by <a href="http://george08.blogspot.com/2005/03/how-to-survive-bear-attack.html" rel="nofollow">the fabulous George</a>, which goes a little bit like this:

To survive a bear attack, all you need is a fork. When the bear attacks, stab your hiking buddy in the leg with a fork and run.

I dunno. I kind of like security design wrt bears.

I don't have to outrun the bear... I just have to outrun my dimwitted campmates.

(it's why locking your car is better than not... even though it's trivial for a bandit to break the security... I have a substantial delta by making sure my car isn't the easiest in the parking garage to steal)

I guess we can take it a step forward:

I don't have to outrun the bear... I just have to be less tasty than my plump campmates.

(i.e. don't need to flash all my, as the kids say, "bling" when walking down dark alleys at night.)

you may appreciate the powell's bookstore in Portland - there is a main store and then a technical-focused store. Go to the the techie one, but don't expect to stay longer than an hour or so. (I found that the more interesting books were greater than 15 years old... everything more recent was already a bit stale / replacable by a good web search)

I used to wonder about using a food processor for dough but finally began trying it recently. It has now become a no-brainer for great pizza dough.

I have great success with pizza stones but the best has been on my Weber grill!! I also don't discriminate between the different types of flour. It's even better since you're not big on cheese. The bbq'd dough is great to eat by itself!

Don't give up. I haven't given Domino's any money in a long time. The effort is worth it:----)

[...] While this pie was quite tasty, the key wasn’t the dough, it was the roasted red and yellow peppers (not hatch chiles, just peppers this time). If it looks a bit odd note that I forgot to buy some cheese, but the majority of the time I don’t like most cheeses on pizza. [...]

Correct!

The legend goes that the topmost drawer in a typesetter's bureau, the UPPER drawer was traditionally where they kept the upper case letters.

You win the admiration of many, the scorn of the losing entries (what losing entries?) and secure knowledge that you embody a Harpold-like knowledge of the history of typesetting.

Oh, and a beverage next time we meet.

Upper case refers to the container of letterforms that typesetters would keep the capitals in. It was above the case for the small letters, hence "upper case". What do I win?

Happy belated Birthday, Buck. Here are a few songs from Confessions of a Buckaholic, a whole CD of original songs about your life and music. Unfortunately, you left this world before you had a chance to hear more than one of these songs, so, if your ear is turned towards earth, I'll give you a couple of these songs now, on your first heavenly birthday:

4 Quarters Gets Me 2 Buck Songs
words and music by Dr. Bruce L. Thiessen, aka Dr. BLT (c)2006

King of the Crystal Palace
words and music by Dr. Bruce L. Thiessen, aka Dr. BLT (c)2006

Sincerely Yours,
Bruce

OK.

Yes.

For the record, let me state that the aforementioned boots were not, in fact, mine.

Thanks Keith, having known about the WCIT before it was coming to Austin, I forget others may not have heard of it. Here is a short article in Austin's local newspaper, the Austin American Stateman, <a href="http://www.statesman.com/business/content/business/stories/technology/04/23wcit.html" rel="nofollow">about the upcoming WCIT.</a>

This is very Gen X. I've found, in general, Gen Y has attempted to ignore this kind of snark (to whatever degree possible). Maybe this is because they're just not old enough to be jaded yet, but I think it's an issue of heightened lateral/cultural mobility.

[...] Don pointed to this piece from the NYU journalism program ranking newspapers on their blog efforts. I’m ambivalent about non-professional blogs integrated into newspaper sites - if the content is that compelling why not have a blog on your own, rather than make money for the paper. It’s interesting to see Houston and San Antonio paper make the top ten, since Austin and Dallas seem to have a “tech city” reputation in Texas. Perhaps Austin and Dallas already have entrenched local blogging cultures, so newspaper efforts go ignored by potential bloggers. [...]
